So when Groupon offered a 50% discount on a month's worth of Bollywood classes (4 classes) I jumped at the chance. The classes take place at the Galaxy dance studio in south Austin. The studio is bright and airy and the sound system is great. My class was all female and had about 10 people in it. The class instructors were welcoming and friendly and started the class with short warm up, then introduced us to several traditional moves, and then began teaching us a choreographed dance. It's great exercise ('cause your hands are above your heart for almost a full hour and there is a certain amount of jumping involved) and great fun. I came to know about Bollywood shake though few friends who had already taken prior classes. Ever since, I have been a regular student of Bollywood Shake. I go once a week. I would like to go more often if I get time out of work and mom's duties. Each class is offered for 1 hr. By the end of the class I am panting and sweating. The class is a mixture of different Bollywood dance moves. In the beginning consists of warm up exercise including few Yoga poses. The next 15 minutes consists of Bhangra. Bhangra is a popular north India dance from Punjab with strong, intense movements. Next time slot we learn the dance routine from one of latest Bollywood song. Session ends with a cool down. I learnt Marjani song(from Movie called Billu Barber) in 4 to 6 session class. Ruchika also encouraged me to perform on the stage. She helped me practice for stage performance. After the performance my friends were surprised and said they did not know I could dance so well.I was very proud to hear it. I am thank full that Ruchika has started these classes in the Austin area. There are many studios and many sessions to choose from. She and all other instructors are very friendly and very experienced dancers. I have currently signed up for the 16 ( 2 - 8 week session for lesser price). We are learning Dholna(poplular folk dance from India). I love this song and have been wanting to learn since a long time. Khushboo my new instructor is incredible dancer and teaches some of the best moves. I found out about Bollywood Shake a few months ago and have been going regularly ever since. It is a great workout just like any other dance fitness class but there are a few things that set Bollywood Shake apart. First, you actually learn dance routines to songs over a 4-8 week session so you feel a sense of accomplishment. Second, the instructors are really good about catering to all levels of experience. They teach the routines on counts first and then to the music, with lots of repetition and coaching to make sure you are getting the steps. I've been to so many dance fitness classes where you're just expected to follow the instructor and pick up on the moves by watching...that can be frustrating for a newbie. Not so, with Bollywood shake, they are great about coaching through the steps. Third, they have a great selection of songs and routines that keep changing every 4-8 weeks so it's long enough to achieve proficiency in a dance routine but short enough to keep things varied and interesting. I found out about Bollywood Shake from a friend and it was great timing because there happened to be a Groupon at the same time, so I figured I would try 4 weeks and see how it went. I was amazed at how much fun this was and what a great workout it was at the same time! An hour class flew by like that and I sure felt it the next day (mostly in the shoulders because of all the shoulder movements, but in a good way). I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a fun workout (without feeling like you are working out, but reaping the benefits). The class combines warmup, a folk dance called Bhangra (this is killer on the shoulders the first time), and a dance routine, then a cool down. There were people of all body types and dancing abilities in the class (I took it at the Spicewood Springs/Mesa location) - there was even a guy in the class! I usually like aerobics and zumba to get the heart pumping, but this was much better because I could go home and put on a show for the husband after learning the dance routine. In 4 weeks, we learned a dance routine to the Jai Ho song from Slumdog Millionaire. I've signed up for another 8-week session and am looking forward to continue to learn more Bollywood songs and dance routines. It's also great to bring some friends to try with you.
